Edward Champlin

Edward Champlin (born June 3, 1948 ) is an American ancient historian .

Edward Champlin was considerably influenced by the presentation of Roman Revolution by Ronald Syme brought to Roman history. Champlin received his bachelor's degree in history from the University of Toronto in 1970 . In 1972 the Master in Classics followed, also in Toronto. In 1976 he obtained the D.Phil. in Literae Humaniores (a degree with classical content, ancient history and philosophy). From 1984 to 1985 he was an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow at Heidelberg University . Champlin has taught as Professor of Classics since 1986 and as Cotsen Professor of Humanities at Princeton University since 1987 . From 1995 to 2003 he was a Masters at Butler College , from 2007 to 2008 a Fellow of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). Champlin is a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute .

His main research interests are the social and cultural history of the Roman Republic and the early Roman Empire . Champlin submitted an authoritative account of the Roman emperor Nero . He is one of the editors of the prestigious handbook The Cambridge Ancient History .
