Hugh Macilwain Last (born December 3, 1894 in Putney , † October 25, 1957 in Strathmore , Mulberry Green , Harlow , Essex ) was a British ancient historian .

His father, William Isaac Last, was the director of the Science Museum in South Kensington . At St Paul's School , Hugh Last turned to Roman history under the influence of his teacher T. Rice Holmes . He went to Lincoln College in 1914 . This was followed in 1916 by Honor Moderations and in 1918 by Literae Humaniores (a degree with classical content, ancient history and philosophy). He had a close relationship with his tutor, William Warde Fowler . In 1919 he became a Last Fellow in Ancient History at St John's College, Oxford . In 1927 he became a last lecturerin Roman history. From 1934 to 1937 he was President of the Roman Society . In 1936 he was offered the venerable Camden chair at Oxford, which he held until 1949. After the death of William Teulon Swan Stallybrass in 1948, Last became Principal of Brasenose College and remained in that position until 1956. Last received honorary doctorates from Edinburgh (1938) and Trinity College, Dublin (1948). Lincoln College made Last an honorary fellow in 1939. Last remained unmarried.

Last co-authored early Roman history with Henry Stuart Jones for the first edition, The Cambridge Ancient History . In 1932 he wrote the history of the Roman Republic from the Gracches of Sulla in the 9th volume of the Cambridge Ancient History manual series . Last published several articles in the Journal of Roman Studies . He was a member of the editorial board of the magazine for many years. Well-known students of Last are AN Sherwin-White and Mason Hammond .
