Adrian Nicolas Sherwin-White (born August 10, 1911 in Brentford , † November 1, 1993 in Fyfield ) was a British ancient historian .

The son of a lawyer came to Oxford in 1930 at St John's College to study Literae Humaniores (a study with classical content, ancient history and philosophy). He received his PhD from Hugh Last with a work published in 1939 under the title The Roman Citizenship . He became a Fellow in 1936 when Last took over the venerable Camden Chair of Ancient History at Oxford. In 1937 he obtained his master's degree . During the Second World War he was exempt from military service because of his weak eyes. In 1956 Sherwin-White was elected a member of the British Academy . In the following years the other important works Ancient Rome (1959), Roman Society and Roman Law in the New Testament (1963) on the reflection of Roman law and the Roman social order in the New Testament and Racial Prejudice in Ancient Rome (1967) on Racial prejudice in imperial Rome. His main work, however, was the historical commentary on the letters of the younger Pliny . From 1966 to 1979 he was a Reader in Ancient History at Oxford University. Sherwin-White was President of the Society for the Promotion of Roman Studies from 1974 to 1977 and a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences since 1977 .

His research focus was above all the area of ​​Roman constitutional and social history. His work The Roman Citizenship on Roman citizenship is one of the standard works on Roman constitutional history. He also authored a large number of articles and reviews in the Journal of Roman Studies .
