Society for the Promotion of Roman Studies

The Society for the Promotion of Roman Studies (also: The Roman Society ) is a British society that aims to promote the study of Rome and the Roman world . This includes history , archeology , literature and art history of Italy and the Roman Empire. The period from the prehistory of Italy to the end of the 7th century of our time is taken into account and all areas of the Roman Empire are covered.

The Roman Society was founded in 1910 as a sister organization to the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies , which has existed since 1879 and, like this one, is based in the Institute of Classical Studies at the University of London . Both companies share a library with the Joint Library , which contains around 128,000 books, 660 magazines and 6,700 slides on the history of the Greek and Roman world and is one of the most important lending libraries for classical studies . The institute and library are located in the university's Senate House .

The society promotes occupation with the Roman world through various initiatives. The most important means here is the publication of scientific journals and monographs. Since 1911, annual publication The Journal of Roman Studies , since 1970 on the archeology of Roman Britain specialized magazine Britannia . Both journals have been supplemented by monographic series since 1981 - the Journal of Roman Studies Monographs and the Britannia Monographs .

In addition, the Roman Society organizes readings and lectures, excursions to sites and museums and invites you to the Roman Archeology Conference every two years . It supports schools financially in structuring lessons on topics from the Roman world, organizes summer academies and awards prizes for outstanding bachelor theses . It also supports excavations , including through scholarships for high school students.

The members of the Roman Society come from a wide variety of social backgrounds and from over forty countries. The current president is Andrew Burnett . Honorary members include Werner Eck , Emilio Gabba , Anthony T. Grafton , Erich S. Gruen , Paul Zanker , among others .
