Institute of Classical Studies

The Institute of Classical Studies ( ICS for short ) is a research institution in the fields of languages, literatures, history, art history, archeology and philosophy of ancient Greece and Rome and part of the University of London's School of Advanced Study .

The Institute of Classical Studies was founded in 1953 by the University's Senate in cooperation with the Society for the Promotion of Roman Studies and the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies . The classical philologist and classical archaeologist TBL Webster is one of the founders . The joint library of the two societies and the institute belongs to the institute . In 1958, the Institute and the Societies moved from their initial location at 50, Bedford Square, to a new purpose-built building at 31-34, Gordon Square , opposite the Warburg Institute , an address that is used as national headquarters in Great Britain the ancient sciences. In August 1997 the institute and the societies moved again, this time to the historic building of the university's Senate House .

From the Institute of Classical Studies , the journal is the Bulletin of the Institute of Classical Studies (1, 1954ff.) Issued.
