The University of Hertfordshire is a university in and around Hatfield , County Hertfordshire , United Kingdom . More than 20,000 students study at the university.

history

The de Havilland Society gave land in Hatfield to the Hertfordshire county government in 1951 on condition that it was used for educational purposes. The Council built the "Hatfield Technical College" there, where aerospace engineers were trained for the aerospace industry that was then dominant in the town. In 1967 it became a polytechnic university. Under the Further and Higher Education Act 1992 she was granted full university status and released into self-government.

What is unusual is that the university runs its own bus company, UnoBus.

Faculties

Hertfordshire was named the flagship of the former polytechnic colleges in a 2002 article by The Independent . As such, she was strong in aerospace engineering and computer science. Recently, strengths in other areas such as pharmacy have also been developed. The entry requirements have recently risen sharply.

The university has eight faculties:

campus

College Lane Campus, main building

The majority remains in the original Hatfield Technical College buildings, although many new buildings have been added since the beginning. The new “Learning Resources Center”, a combination of library and computer center, is one of the largest of its kind in Great Britain. Computer science, engineering and natural sciences are located here, as is the student village (for international students, accommodation on campus is guaranteed in the first year).

Entrance building of the de Havilland campus

The modern de Havilland campus, where economics and humanities as well as another library are located, is very close by. The lawyers moved from St Albans to the de Havilland campus in Hatfield in 2011 . A small branch house houses the university's telescope and the biological field station.

Special research focuses on computer science, history, engineering and philosophy. Technology ethicist Luciano Floridi teaches computer science .
