Hatfield is a town in the Welwyn Hatfield district in Hertfordshire north of London . The city has about 33,000 inhabitants. It is an old trading town on the road north from London.
Modern development
There are many London commuters living in Hatfield , as its proximity to the metropolis has resulted in strong population growth in recent decades. The most important local employer was aircraft construction for a long time until around 1990 . The De Havilland Aircraft Company had its first and most important plant here with an attached airfield. This facility was later taken over by British Aerospace . The company promoted the establishment of a technical college in Hatfield since 1951.
Scenes from the film Saving Private Ryan by Steven Spielberg and the series Band of Brothers were filmed on the spacious grounds .
From the end of the 1990s, the airport site became an urban development area. The University of Hertfordshire expanded its central De Havilland campus here and closed the branches in Watford and Hertford . A commercial area, a large shopping center (The Galleria), a sports park and apartments were created.
traffic
Hatfield is only a few kilometers north of the London ring road (M25) and is intersected by the motorway-like A1 (M). Hatfield is also on the East Coast Main Line : London ( King's Cross ) - Newcastle - Edinburgh .
Railway accidents
On October 17, 2000, a serious railway accident occurred at Hatfield Station with four dead and over 100 injured.
On May 10, 2002, there was a similarly serious accident in the neighboring town of Potters Bar .
Attractions
Hatfield has little historical building stock. First and foremost, Hatfield House should be mentioned. Construction began in 1497. King Henry VIII made it a royal residence and his daughter, Queen Elizabeth I , stayed here frequently. The church of St. Etheldreda should also be mentioned .
