Hachirogata ( Japanese 八郎 潟 ) is a lake in Akita Prefecture in northern Japan . Its official name is Hachirō Lake ( 八郎 湖 , Hachirō-ko ). It is also called Hachirōgata regulation pond ( 八郎 潟 調整 池 , Hachirōgata chōseichi ).

It was once the second largest lake in Japan after Lake Biwa . Extensive drainage began in 1957 to create agricultural land. The village of Ogata was founded on October 1st, 1964 on the former lake bed. The rest of the lake has an area of 27.7 km² (18th place in Japan).

Some view the drainage as a mistake as Japan faced an excess of rice soon after the measures were completed . Others lament the loss of the wetlands.

At 4 m below sea level, the lake floor is the deepest point in Japan today.

Fishing for shijimi clams ( Corbicula japonica ) was once a thriving industry. However, it is on the decline as the water is less brackish today, which has made the mussel's living conditions worse. In winter you can fish for Wakasagi ( Hypomesus nipponensis ) on the ice . The fishing for small bass (Micropterus pec.) Also attracts anglers from other prefectures. On the other hand, the fish that are not indigenous here are suspected of endangering native fish species.

According to legend, a man named Hachirō, transformed into a Chinese dragon, chose the place as his home after a long hike and the lake was named after him Hachirōgata ( -gata means lagoon ). He later fell in love with a woman who owned Lake Tazawa , another lake in Akita Prefecture, and moved in with her. After that, the hachirogata became flatter and flatter.
