The Lake Tazawa ( Jap. 田沢湖 , Tazawa-ko ) is a caldera lake in Akita prefecture in northern Japan . At 423.4 m, it is the deepest lake in Japan. Because of its depth, it never freezes over even in harsh winters.

The lake used to boast of its clear water, which could compete with the Mashū Lake in Hokkaidō . However , the water was polluted by the construction of a dam for a hydropower plant in 1940 and the sewage from a thermal spring . This led to the disappearance of the kunimasu ( Oncorhynchus nerka kawamurae ), a fish taxon believed to be endemic to Lake Tazawa . In 2010, however, a population was rediscovered in Lake Saiko near Mount Fuji .

The former community of Tazawako (a district of Senboku since 2005 ) is named after the lake. JR East operates a Tazawako Line and there was once a Tazawa express train from Morioka to Akita until it was replaced by the Akita Shinkansen in 1997 .
