The Mashū Lake ( Japanese 摩 周 湖 Mashū-ko ) is a caldera lake on an inactive volcano Mashū . It is located in Akan National Park in the municipality of Teshikaga in the sub-prefecture of Kushiro in the east of the island of Hokkaidō in Japan .

The 19.2 km² large and 20 km circumferential lake is up to 211.4 m deep. In the middle lies the island of Kamuishu ( カ ム イ シ ュ 島 ), 110 m long and 40 m wide . On the east bank is the volcanic cone Mashū-dake ( 摩 周 岳 ; Ainu カ ム イ ヌ プ リ Kamuy-nupuri , German for ' mountain of the gods' ).

Lake Mashu is famous for its clear water, which in 1931 allowed 40 m visibility, surpassing Lake Baikal . Today visibility is measured around 20 m. The release of two species of trout and air pollution are likely to further worsen visibility. The lake , which is 351 m above sea level , owes its very clear water to the fact that it is fed exclusively by meltwater and rainwater and that it supports almost no flora and fauna. Lake Mashu has no drainage.

The Ainu is the Kamuy-to (literally "Göttersee") holy. Even today, Ainu hold a party every year on a summer night at the lake.

It is also known for the fact that clouds and fog rarely allow a completely clear view of the lake. Presumably as a consolation it is said that good weather and a clear view of Lake Mashu mean bad things for a couple.
