Welwyn Hatfield is an administrative district with borough status in Hertfordshire in England . It borders Greater London to the south and consists of the towns of Welwyn Garden City and Hatfield .
The district was formed on April 1, 1974 and was formed from the merger of the Urban District Welwyn Garden City and the Rural Districts Welwyn and Hatfield. The district initially had the status of a district and applied for a borough . The Privy Council gave its consent on November 15, 2005, and the change took place on May 22, 2006.
