The new Great Ashby district is located on the border area with the North Hertfordshire District. There are 3 schools, a parish, a medium-sized supermarket, a pharmacy, a hairdresser, a Chinese snack bar and soon a small hospital.

The Stevenage pedestrian mall, opened in 1959, was the first of its kind in the UK and is due for renovation over the next few years. So far, only a few shops have renovated their facades and showrooms.

The number of underage mothers is one of the highest in the country (similar to Greenock in Scotland). The divorce rate is also very high.
