Potters Bar is a town in the English county of Hertfordshire and is located directly on the border with Greater London and on the M25 London ring road .
The city has 21,639 inhabitants (as of 2001) and belongs to the metropolitan area of London. Within the county it is administratively assigned to the district of Hertsmere .
Originally, Potter's Bar was part of Middlesex County . When Greater London was formed in 1965 and Middlesex was dissolved in return, it became the county of Hertfordshire.
Located on the railway line between London's King's Cross Station and York , the city hit the headlines when a railway accident killed 7 and injured 76 on May 10, 2002. One of the injured was the children's book author Nina Bawden , whose husband Austen Kark was killed in the accident.
Trivia
In 1912 the beetle species Aglyptinus agathidioides was discovered in a pond claw nest near Potters Bar . The species is only known from two specimens and has not been seen since. It may be an extinct species or one from North or Central America that was introduced to England by chance.
