Nina Bawden

Nina Mary Bawden CBE (born Nina Mary Mabey in London on January 19, 1925 , † August 22, 2012 ) was a British writer .

Life

Bawden grew up in Ilford in a rather ugly housing estate that [her] mother despised ("a rather nasty housing estate that [her] mother despised"). Her mother was a teacher and her father was an engineer in the Navy .

When World War II began, she spent her school holidays with her mother and brothers on a farm in Shropshire but lived in Aberdare , South Wales during her school years .

She attended Somerville College , part of Oxford University , from 1943 to 1946 , where she graduated in philosophy , politics and economics .

Her books include Listen, it's very close (Carrie's War) , The Peppermint Pig (Peppermint Pig) , and The Witches daughter (The Witch's Daughter) . A large number of her works have been filmed by the BBC 's children's program and many have been translated into different languages.

Private life

In 1946 she married her first husband Harry Bawden, with whom she had two sons and from whom she was divorced in 1954. Nina married her second husband Austen Kark in 1954 , with whom she had a daughter. He was killed in the Potters Bar railway accident in 2002 while she survived seriously injured. Nina Bawden lived alternately in London and Nauplion , Greece .
