Ten-year-old orphan girl Perdita is raised by old Annie MacLaren and her brother after the accidental death of her father, a fisherman and the later drowning of her mother. When he dies, the old woman has to sell the small farm and finds work and accommodation with Mr. Smith, who three years earlier bought a run-down house on the small Scottish island and had some rooms adapted in a makeshift manner. The strange man doesn't want Perdita to go to school and play with other children on the island. Annie tells the child that her mother was a witch and that she is special. These rumors are widespread among the islanders, so that the other children don't even dare to go near the little ones.
The girl is very lonely until the day when strangers come to the island. A married couple with two children, twelve-year-old Tim and nine-year-old blind Janey. The three children become friends with each other. In addition, a Mr. Jones arrived that day, a strange, toffees-eating man with new golf equipment, although there is no golfing facility on Skua. The children's father, Mr. Hoggart, is a botanist and is looking for a special, very rare species of orchid. On one of the excursions Tim accompanies him, who collects stones and finds a beautiful pink stone that looks like a ruby ​​in a hidden cave. When he shows this Mr. Jones, he tries to convince him that it is only glass, but that he would like to examine the stone for him, since he would understand something about it. The boy suspiciously refuses. What he does not know is that this find was the trigger for some strange and dangerous events for the three children.
They are drawn into dramatic events when they discover they accidentally tracked down jewel thieves and an unsolved robbery that happened three years ago.
