history

Seal over the entrance gate

The university's forerunners were the successively merged higher education institutions of Sheffield Medical School (founded in 1828), Firth College  - a science school - (1879) and Sheffield Technical School (1884). At the turn of the century there were plans to merge these together with the educational institutions in Leeds , Liverpool and Manchester , which were established at the same time, in a supra-regional university, but the establishment of the independent University of Leeds in 1904 made this obsolete. The colleges in Sheffield finally received the Royal Charter by King Edward VII in 1905 to educate the University of Sheffield with only 114 students at the time.

Since its inception, the University of Sheffield has been one of the civil universities in England, which is also reflected in the courses offered. It is also a major research university. The University of Sheffield receives extensive research contracts from industry, including Boeing , Rolls-Royce , Unilever and GlaxoSmithKline . The university has a very high reputation among employees and is one of the higher education institutions at which leading employers such as Goldman Sachs , PricewaterhouseCoopers or Google recruit.
