Her Majesty's Prison Service
The Her Majesty's Prison Service (translated as Prison Service Her Majesty ) is the supreme Prison Service in England and Wales . As such, the agency reports directly to the UK Department of Justice. The HMPA is responsible for the management and operation of 138 prisons and for the employment of about 44,000 prison officers in these institutions. Organizationally, the Director-General of the HMPS reports to the Secretary of State for the Home Department , a post that is comparable to that of a Home Secretary. At the same time he reports to the Prisons Minister , a senior official in the Ministry of Justice. Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own law enforcement agencies, whose institutions are not under the HMPS but are still referred to as Her Majesty's Prison .
Purpose and tasks
“Her Majesty's Prison Service serves the public by keeping in custody those committed by the courts. Our duty is to look after them with humanity and help them lead law-abiding and useful lives in custody and after release. "
“Her Majesty's prison service serves the public by detaining those convicted by the courts. It is our job to look after them humanely and to help them to lead a law-abiding and useful life in custody and after their release. "
The aim of the authority is therefore to enable the prisoners to resocialize and at the same time to complete this from the population during their imprisonment. This complies with the regulations of the European Union regarding reasons and conditions of detention and is handled in a similar way in all European countries.
