It originally launched on February 5, 1989 as part of the four-channel satellite package from Sky Television , a company owned by Rupert Murdoch's media group . The station is at BSkyB's headquarters in West London near Isleworth , Middlesex .
Sky News started with very limited resources but very quickly gained reputations for its journalistic integrity. Although the channel was operating at a loss for most of the time , its award-winning journalism brought its parent company Sky Television and its successor British Sky Broadcasting the long-awaited prestige.
Sky News is considered the forerunner of the US news broadcaster Fox News Channel , with which material is also sometimes exchanged, as both Sky News and Fox News Channel belong to the media conglomerate of News Corporation , of which Rupert Murdoch is chairman and founder.
In 2003 there were plans to offer Sky News also in the USA . But these were dropped again.
In 2010, Sky launched an HD version of Sky News.
On May 6, 2012, “Sky News Arabia” went on air.
The main competition in the UK is BBC News , while elsewhere in Europe it includes BBC World News and CNN International . A new service from the station for the Republic of Ireland began operating in May 2004 and is called Sky News Ireland .
In Europe, Sky News can be received digitally unencrypted via the Astra satellite positions at 19.2 ° and 28.2 ° East.
In Australia, Sky News is distributed via the Sky News Australia branch , in which PBL Media has a one-third stake.
