history
Appens was first mentioned in a document on September 19, 1269 in a deed of donation from the knight Heinrich II von Barmstede . Early and prehistoric finds, however, testify to a significantly earlier settlement of the area. Evidence of an earlier settlement of the municipality is the Early Bronze Age burial mound De Danzenbarg on the Pinnau.
With the new air base, today's NCO School of the Air Force, which is based in the Marseille barracks , a change in the community away from its purely agricultural character began in 1936 . As part of the realignment of the Bundeswehr , according to the stationing concept 2011 , the number of posts at the Appen location is to be reduced from 500 to 350.
On July 1, 2006, Appen gave up his freedom of office and has since been administered by the Geest and Marsch Südholstein Office (formerly the Moorrege Office).

coat of arms
Blazon : "In red a silver crane flying diagonally right above, accompanied below right by an upright silver rye ear, below left by a five-petalled, red-filled silver rose with five green sepals."
The coat of arms was designed by Paul Heinrich Gnekow from Marne and approved in 1969. The ear of wheat stands for agriculture , the rose symbolizes the local rose-growing businesses and tree nurseries, while the crane is a symbol for the air force stationed in Appen . The colors red and silver are the Holstein colors.
