The Klövensteen is a wooded area on the western border of Hamburg . It extends over an area of more than 513 hectares in the Hamburg districts of Rissen and Sülldorf as well as in parts of the Schleswig-Holstein region (towns of Pinneberg and Wedel and the communities of Appen and Holm ).

Originally, the area was part of an inland dune stretch of over 100 kilometers with small moor areas, which stretched north of the Elbe from today's Kiel Canal via the Haseldorfer Marsch to Geesthacht . The forest was created by afforestation in the 19th century.

The terrain is level and consists mostly of mixed forest with deciduous and coniferous trees, which is loosened up by clearings, forest and orchard meadows. The Schnaakenmoor nature reserve is located in the southwest of the forest . Further areas of the forest are located in three different landscape protection areas in Hamburg and in the Pinneberg district. The southern edge of the Klövensteen is marked by the Wedeler Au , a small, 12.6 kilometer long brook that swells in Sülldorf and flows into the Lower Elbe in Wedel (Schleswig-Holstein).

The area was afforested around 1793 on former arable and heather areas. Today it is used for forestry and agriculture as well as a local recreation area and is accessed through a well-maintained network of hiking and riding trails. A game reserve on Sandmoorweg, a large forest playground on Klövensteenweg and the "Pony-Waldschänke", a small pony farm with a restaurant, are also suitable for leisure activities .
