The Republic Square is a park in Hamburg-Altona .
Surname
The square was originally laid out in 1897 as "Kaiserplatz". During the Weimar Republic , it was renamed "Platz der Republik" for the first time in 1922. During the Nazi era , the square was called “Adolf-Hitler-Platz” from 1933. After the merger of Hamburg and Altona , it was renamed "Reichsplatz" in 1938, as there was already a square of the same name in Hamburg. After the end of the Second World War , the park got its current name again.
Location and surroundings
The square is located on the western border of the Hamburg district of Altona-Altstadt between the Hamburg-Altona train station and the Altona town hall . Max-Brauer-Allee runs east of the square, Museumstrasse to the west. On the west side of the square are the Altona Theater , the Altona Museum and the eastern front of the building of the former Royal Prussian Railway Directorate Altona and the later Railway Directorate Hamburg.
history
With the relocation of the Altona train station , whose tracks previously occupied this space, an open area was created at the end of the 19th century, which was converted into a park in 1895. The former station building was retained and was expanded to represent the Altona town hall .
Space design
The square has large green areas with rhododendrons and other ornamental shrubs, as well as playgrounds and seating. The Stuhlmannbrunnen is located in the northern half of the park, and a memorial for killed Jews from Altona has been built at the southern end of the park.
