The Altona town hall on the Platz der Republik in Hamburg-Altona-Altstadt is a listed office building. Since 1898 it has been the (temporally third) town hall of the town of Altona, which was independent until 1938 . Originally the building was the station building of the Altona-Kieler Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft , which was rebuilt in 1898 a few hundred meters north as the Altona Hauptbahnhof .

Imperial visit to the inauguration of the town hall

The four-wing complex is influenced by the Italian Renaissance with a gable relief above the main entrance on the north side by Ernst Barlach and Karl Garbers with a family in a fishing boat led by a winged female figure. Inside, the college hall for the city council assembly (1st floor in the north wing) and an official apartment for the mayor (east wing) were created through renovations. The college room was decorated in 1900 with paintings by Ludwig Dettmann , which refer to the former belonging to Denmark .

Central front of the north side was the Altona Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial by Gustav Eberlein as equestrian statue of William I built. It was inaugurated on June 18, 1898 in the presence of the imperial couple. A Bismarck monument was originally planned at this location .

Since the end of the Second World War , the town hall has housed the Hamburg-Altona district office , and the college room is used in particular for the plenary sessions of the Altona district assembly . The registry office is located in the south wing, built in 1844 ; Due to the handsome building and its location above the Elbe, it is a popular place for weddings.
