The Altonaer Theater (until Altona was incorporated into Hamburg Altonaer Stadttheater ) is a private Hamburg theater that brings literature to the stage, including classics, international bestsellers and young German literature. Anna Karenina , Der Steppenwolf , Die Vermessung der Welt or The Hundred Year Old Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared have already been seen. In-house productions, guest performances and special events are shown. Axel Schneider has been director of the theater since 1995.

history

Share of 300 RM in the company of the Altonaer Schauspielhaus from May 1, 1876

Character comedies and dramas found their ideal venues in the theater on the Palmaille , which was opened in 1783 “for the leisure of the citizens” . The company of the Altonaer Schauspielhaus opened the theater in Königstrasse after the war in 1876. More contemporary works were played there, which was considered a great exception at the time. On June 20, 1919 the company was renamed Altonaer Stadttheater AG . In 1943 the house with the theater fell victim to the bombs.

Since 1954, the auditorium in the former “Haus der Jugend” (trade school) in Museumstrasse has been the new venue under the management of Hans Fitze . The building complex was built in 1928-30 according to plans by the Senator for Urban Development, Gustav Oelsner . The reinforced concrete building, built in the style of New Building , is a deliberate contrast to the Altona town hall and the museum .
