The cellar theater Hamburg e. V. is an amateur theater in Hamburg . It is located in the Brahms Kontor at Johannes-Brahms-Platz 1.

history

The theater was founded in 1954 as a touring theater “Optimisten” and in 1966 was able to move into the rooms in the basement of the former DAG house (since 2005 Brahms Kontor). The theater acts as a registered association . The board is re-elected every two years. The chairman and manager from 1961 to April 2015 was Günter Karl Dose, who only works as a theater director under his two first names. He himself has been a member of the theater group since 1958. His successor is Joachim Kahl. Overall, the board consists of members from the areas of dramaturgy , theater technology, theater organization, finance and public relations .

In the first few years, the theater had to share the rooms with the Tangente youth club . In the beginning, one play per year was staged , which was performed two to three times a week, according to other information only on Wednesdays. Vera Schröder was press officer around 1979. At the time, the statutes stipulated that no one with acting classes or art studies was allowed on the stage . No fees were paid at the time.

When the building was renovated between 2004 and 2008, the basement theater went on tour again in various venues in and around Hamburg, mainly church institutions. Since 2008 it has been located in the building now known as the Brahms Kontor. The theater hall has about 90-100 seats. The basement theater has over 100 members who secure the financing with their membership fees and the income from the entrance fees and donations from sponsors. Over a dozen directors work on the house . Around 15 pieces are staged each year and presented in two to three weekend performances. In 2014 a total of 22 pieces were performed. As part of workshops and training courses , talented young people are offered acting training .
