The English Theater of Hamburg is an English-speaking theater in Hamburg . The privately run house was founded in 1976 by two Americans and is the oldest English-speaking theater in Germany.

History and program

The stage was founded in 1976 by the Americans Robert Rumpf and Clifford Dean. Together they manage the theater, plan the artistic program and direct many productions.

The English Theater is subsidized by the Hamburg cultural authority , is a non-profit organization and a member of the German Stage Association .

The program runs from September to June and presents pieces in the English original. A season in English theater usually includes an American or British classic or modern drama , a comedy , a thriller and a contemporary play. There are one hundred and sixty seats. In addition, the theater offers schools in Hamburg and the surrounding area free teaching material for each individual piece; Discussions with the director and actors after a performance are offered if requested.

Buildings and theater equipment

The theater has been based at Lerchenfeld 14 an der Mundsburg since 1981 . The building used to house the Hammonia-Bad , a bathing establishment , and has been a listed building since 1977.
