Theater in the room

The theater in the room is a private theater in Hamburg .

history

The "Theater in the Room" was in 1948 by Helmuth Gmelin as " Room Stage " with a performance of Friedrich Hebbel's Maria Magdalena founded. The first performances took place in my own apartment on the top floor of an apartment building in Harvestehude . The actors often came from Gmelin's own drama school.

The cramped space was unsuitable for many plays, and it was necessary to move to its own premises. A classicist villa at Alsterchaussee 30, which was built by Christian Diederich Gerhard Schwieger in 1829 and has been a listed building since 1947, served as a later venue . In the middle of the 19th century the captain and shipowner Victor von Graefe bought and lived in the villa. He was the brother of Albrecht von Graefe .

After Helmuth Gmelin's death in 1959, his daughter Gerda Gmelin took over the theater. She was artistic director, director and actress at the same time. Numerous time-critical and avant-garde pieces were performed, which led to the theater's good reputation. The small ensemble was regularly supplemented by hiring other actors who worked on Hamburg theaters. On Sundays there were musical morning pints in the theater.

After the annual subsidies were canceled by the Hamburg Senate's cultural authority , the theater ceased operations in May 1999. There was also a considerable need for renovation, and Gerda Gmelin was no longer able to continue the theater due to her age. The program and games were shaped by her personality. A successor in the directorship could not be found.

The house, which was added to the list of cultural monuments in the Hamburg district of Eimsbüttel in 1947 , was sold in 2002 and extensively renovated by the new owner. In 2004 the reopening followed with the production of Tamara , a play by John Krizanc about the painter Tamara de Lempicka , in which the audience can wander through different rooms with individual scenes and thus follow the action. The theater regularly hosts theater and music events as well as readings, and the building is used by the neighboring University of Music and Theater Hamburg for rehearsals, performances and seminars.

Martha Kunicki from Hamburg is the artistic director and managing partner of the theater.
