The community borders Elmshorn in the east , Altenmoor (Steinburg district) in the northwest and Neuendorf (Steinburg district) in the southwest . In the south, the Krückau forms the municipal boundary .
The district of Raa is located in the Elbmarschen , the district of Besenbek mainly in the Geest . Accordingly, the houses in Raa are built along a flood protection wall (lander) on Wurten (terps) . In the southwest of the village, on the Krückau, lies the Spiekerhörn district, which used to be a regional enclave of Elmshorn.

The place is connected to the local public transport with the bus routes 6500 and 6521 (as of 2020). There is a connection to Elmshorn and Glückstadt .
The federal road 431 (Elmshorn-Glückstadt) runs through the municipality.

History

The history of the place over the centuries is characterized by the struggle against storm surges from the Elbe and against the water masses from the moors. Dykes and drainage canals were built, repaired after dyke breaks, then relocated or completely rebuilt.

The first settlement took place in the 12th century. Frisians settled in Groß Besenbek, Flemings in Raa. The first dikes were built and the existing watercourses regulated. The name Raa was first mentioned in writing in 1366.

In 1578 the Mönkloh Treaty established the border between the Schauenburg County of Holstein-Pinneberg and the Duchy of Holstein , which was under the rule of the Danish king. This "Landscheide" forms the border between the districts of Pinneberg and Steinburg on the northern edge of the municipality. It's a dead straight dam with a dirt road.

The district of Spiekerhörn in the south-west, which has belonged to Raa-Besenbek since 1938, used to be a regional enclave of Elmshorn. In the past, the Krückau was only navigable as far as here, on the promontory (Hörn) near the Spieker (Speicher).
