About this picture
Heidgraben community center

Heidgraben ( Low German : Haidgraven ) is a municipality in the Pinneberg district in Schleswig-Holstein .

Geography and traffic

Heidgraben located 18 kilometers northwest of Hamburg at the edge of the marsh areas on the protruding into the march Geest areas . It borders the small towns of Uetersen and Tornesch and the communities of Klein Nordende and Groß Nordende .

The community area is rather scattered. In addition to the town center in the area of the school, there are other settlement focal points on the edges, such as Heidgraben-Nordwest towards the march and the edge zones towards the neighboring towns of Uetersen and Tornesch. Large parts of the municipality are designated as a landscape protection area. The basis is the protected area ordinance "Boggy wetlands (LSG 07)" issued by the district administrator of the Pinneberg district.

The proportion of residents who work in agriculture or as tree nurseries is only small, the vast majority commute to work in the area or to Hamburg. Heidgraben has a primary school. The Markttreff shopping and event center, which opened in summer 2014, offers a grocery store, a hairdressing studio and a bakery shop with a café, a post office and an ATM.

In public transport Heidgraben is through a bus connection of the Kvip in Hamburg Transport Association connected (HVV) between Tornesch and Uetersen. From Tornesch there are rail connections with regional trains to Elmshorn , Pinneberg and Hamburg (HVV tariff).

To the east of Heidgraben, the federal highway 23 runs from Pinneberg to Elmshorn. Heidgraben is connected to this via the Tornesch and Elmshorn junctions.

history

Origin of the place

Heidgraben was first mentioned in 1688 in the Pinneberg official registers. However, one can assume that at that time it was not a village, but a largely uninhabited area. In what is now the municipality, there was a barren moor and heathland landscape . In maps from 1785 this area is called the Egypt moor. It was crossed by a large ditch (Heidgraben), which led into the marshland and had been created to drain the swamp and moorland. The inhabitants of the adjacent fertile marshland cut peat here, which served as fuel.

Gradual cultivation began at the beginning of the 18th century. In 1735 Heidgraben was in the records of the Office vogtei first mentioned as a village Uetersen. Administratively it belonged to the district of Groß-Nordende, from 1835 to the district of Groß-Nordende within the district bailiwick of Uetersen.

The division of the moorland in the course of the agrarian reform of 1791 was decisive for the cultivation of the moor. The area was divided among 76 interested parties, 19 from Groß Nordende and 57 from Heidgraben. The settlement took place from the west. The first settlers in Heidgraben initially lived in cave-like dwellings, and only later built thatched-roof houses, like the five sons of the Hans Krohn family. Many colonists also had to work for the march farmers to support themselves and their families. The rest of the time , they cut peat , raised some cattle, and gradually began to cultivate the land. Since the manure from their small livestock was initially insufficient for fertilization, they had to bring manure with them from the cities on their peat trips.

Only gradually did the situation improve somewhat, so that the new farmers were also able to sell meat and milk products on the surrounding markets. Further products of the still poor residents of Heidgraben were heather for covering the roof and scrubbers made of heather or brushwood and clothespins made of wood.

Subsequently, the population continued to grow. The children of the village first went to school in Groß Nordende . In view of the poor road conditions, this was very difficult, especially since the way to school was over four kilometers for some students. In 1890, the municipal representatives were instructed by the district administrator to create a school path. Heidgraben then got its own school in 1894. It was a single-class elementary school with a teacher's apartment. Classes started with 46 children. (The old school building from 1826 in Groß Nordende still exists in 2009, but it has not been used as a school for a long time.)
