Challes is a commune with 1,221 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Sarthe in the region Pays de la Loire . Challes is part of the arrondissement of Le Mans and the canton of Changé (until 2015: canton of Le Mans-Est-Campagne ). The inhabitants call themselves "Challois".

Challes is located about 17 kilometers east-southeast of Le Mans on the Narais . Challes is surrounded by the neighboring communities Ardenay-sur-Mérize in the north, Surfonds in the northeast, Volnay in the east, Saint-Mars-de-Locquenay in the east and southeast, Villaines-sous-Lucé in the southeast, Le Grand-Lucé in the south and Parigné -l'Évêque to the west.
