Hubertus Lehner

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hubertus Karl Rudolph Lehner (born April 17, 1907 in Griesel, Crossen an der Oder , † October 22, 2006 in Heidgraben ) was a German painter and student of Otto Mueller .

Life

Lehner was born in his parents' forester's house, his ancestors were farmers and foresters for generations. He began to draw and paint at an early age - also encouraged by his (naively) painting father.

After graduating from high school in Schwiebus in 1925 , Lehner first studied philosophy and art history for a semester in Vienna . He then studied for six semesters from 1926 to 1929 at the State Academy for Arts and Crafts in Breslau (today: Wrocław / Poland). Alongside the Bauhaus, this academy was the most important art academy in Germany at the time. Many styles and art movements were represented there by very different teachers. Lehner was able to deal with such famous opposing teachers as Alexander Kanoldt , a main representative of the “New Objectivity”, and Otto Mueller , member of the well-known artist community Die Brücke . Lehner also helped print Mueller's famous "Gypsy folder".

In 1930 Lehner was enrolled for two semesters at the Kunst- und Werkschule in Düsseldorf, where the students were taught by masters of various professions. He concluded this phase of study with his works teacher exam. In 1931 he spent his exam semester in Berlin, where he was taught by Georg Tappert and Erich Heckel , among others . In Berlin Lehner passed his art education exams for all subjects with distinction. For half a year Lehner was then assessor in Schwiebus. In 1933 he was named assessor at the state high school for boys and girls in Jastrow, Deutsch Krone district, later Herderschule. Here, in the Pomeranian Province, he was able to work artistically and educationally undisturbed by the National Socialists. A boarding school for foreign students was attached to the school, and Lehner was entrusted with the management of the home. In addition to teaching art and handicrafts, he led a sailplane construction group with students.

In March 1939 he married his former student Gisela Felde , born in Betkenhammer in what was then the Deutsch Krone district . They moved into a small farm on the Küddow in Michlerstal in Tarnowke / Flatow district across from Betkenhammer, where both were active in agriculture. His three oldest children were born there. In addition to managing his farm, Lehner taught art, crafts, sports and gymnastics at the school in Jastrow. This phase of life was broken off by military service.

In 1946 Lehner was released from captivity and met his family, who had since fled, in Lorsch. His fourth child was born there in 1947. A large number of commissioned works were created, often in joint artistic production by the couple, for example industrial design, ceramics, arts and crafts, etc.

From 1952 Lehner taught again as an art teacher and sports teacher, this time at the Ludwig-Meyn-Gymnasium in Uetersen , Pinneberg district, Schleswig-Holstein. It was here that one of his most famous pictures, "The Harlequin or the King's Shadow", was created, for which a student dressed as a model for a school performance. In 1954 his family also moved north and in 1956 his fifth child was born. Until 1974 Lehner taught many generations of students at the Ludwig-Meyn-Schule in Uetersen. Now the solo exhibitions and participation in exhibitions (often together with his wife, who also paints) followed one another at times and his Heidgraben studio became a meeting point for art talks with guests, including many former students. The Lehners had a lifelong artistic friendship with the Berlin artist couple Alice Brasse-Forstmann and Otto Adolf Brasse . Numerous trips took him abroad, especially to Denmark , Tunisia and the island of Lanzarote , but also Tyrol , France and Spain .

In 1998 his wife Gisela died. From 2002 Lehner was forced to give up painting due to the increasing deterioration of his eyesight. On October 22nd, 2006 he died in his studio in Heidgraben .

After experiments with lithography, lino printing and oil painting, Lehner's preferred techniques in later years were watercolor and casein painting, mixed media and graphics. After a very serious illness at the beginning of the 90s, he started again from scratch and created large-format pictures of impressive depth and luminosity.

Two of his designs are metal sculptures in building art at the swimming pool in Uetersen and in a school in Tornesch .

Many of his works are characterized by clear, reduced brushstrokes and expressive colors. Preferred subjects are portraits, landscapes and animals, especially cows and horses, clearly shaped by memories of his lost homeland.
