The federal highway 23 (abbreviation: BAB 23 ) - short form: Autobahn 23 (abbreviation: A 23 ) - is a four-lane highway 96 kilometers in length between the Schleswig-Holstein Heide and the federal highway 7 in Hamburg . It is also called the West Coast Highway.

    course

The A 23 begins at the Hamburg-Nordwest motorway triangle , the first junction is Eidelstedt . Shortly afterwards, the A 23 crosses the border to Schleswig-Holstein and crosses Krupunder . It goes around the inner cities of Pinneberg and Elmshorn and continues past Lägerdorf . Itzehoe bypasses the town , then crosses the Kiel Canal near the municipality of Schafstedt , passes Albersdorf and heads north-west to Heide (Holstein) , which is bypassed to the south-west. To the northwest of Heide, the autobahn turns into federal highway 5 (n).

    history

The first section of the route was opened in 1964 from today's Hamburg-Stellingen junction as a bypass from Hamburg-Eidelstedt to the state border of Hamburg. This section between Stellingen and Krupunder was planned and built in this area at the same time as the construction of the B 4 in the direction of Neumünster and Kiel (today part of the A 7 ), today's Hamburg-Northwest motorway triangle marks the separation of the two federal highways at that time . In 1968 the four-lane passage through Halstenbek (with traffic light-controlled crossings) and bypassing Pinneberg was completed, both at the time as a new construction of the federal highway 5 , in the route of which it merged from 1968 north of the Pinneberg-Nord junction near Kummerfeld . The route to Elmshorn followed in 1975 and to Itzehoe in 1981. The last section from Itzehoe to Heide was completed in 1990, but there was still a gap between Itzehoe-Süd and Itzehoe-Mitte (including the Störbrücke); this section was operated in the area of the ramps of the Störbrücke in the "2 + 1" procedure (two lanes "uphill" and one lane "downhill"). Since 1975 the route has been designated as A 23, initially with the gap in Halstenbek (here still as federal highway 5 until expansion-free expansion in 1986).

Since the early 1960s, representatives of the west coast had been calling for this section of the country to be better connected to the German road network. However, the autobahn was born much earlier. As early as the 1930s, the need to improve the traffic conditions on what was then Reichsstraße 5 was recognized and, among other things, the Elmshorn bypass was prepared, which was completed between 1947 and 1950.

On May 12, 1969, the then Federal Transport Minister Georg Leber announced a four-lane expansion of federal highway 204 between Itzehoe and Heide (a "shortcut" between these towns on the B 5, which runs in a wide arc directly on the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein). In February 1984 the first groundbreaking ceremony took place between Schafstedt and the Hohenhörn canal ferry. On 20./21. May 1989 the 360 meter long and 56 meter high Hohenhörn high bridge was inaugurated over the Kiel Canal. The first section opened was the city bypass in Heide, which was released on June 30, 1989, initially the last section on October 1, 1990, the eight kilometer stretch between the Schenefeld and Itzehoe-Nord junctions. The construction of the 45-kilometer section from Itzehoe to Heide cost 402 million marks (today: around 342,902,000 euros). The motorway runs over a total of 70 bridges in this area.

Old Störbrücke on the A 23 at the start of construction work; Please note the steel supports on the right and left of the river crossing that have been in place for years.
Opening of the western Stör Bridge in October 2015

From March 2, 2006, the B 5 / B 204 was also expanded to four lanes between the junctions Itzehoe-Mitte and Itzehoe-Süd and released on June 11, 2016, also here as the A 23. The Stör Bridge, which was built here from 1965 to 1967, was only approved for traffic until 2013, a renovation because of the rusted steel cables inside and the questionable quality of the building materials from the start did not seem sensible. It was replaced by two new two-lane bridges. First, the north-east bridge was rebuilt, after the road was opened in June 2010, the old bridge was demolished and a second new bridge for the south-facing direction was built in the same place and opened to traffic in October 2015. The design of the new bridges is based on Paul Klee's painting Revolution of the Viaduct . The whole gap closure adds up to around 159 million euros. Around half of the costs were for the demolition and construction of the bridge.

    Planned expansion measures

The A 23 is to be expanded to six lanes in the Hamburg area in the long term. In a transitional period, the hard shoulder could be opened to flowing traffic. The route section is particularly congested in rush hour traffic; over 75,000 vehicles are counted here every day. The law on the expansion of trunk roads, which was amended at the end of 2016, provides for the six-lane expansion between Tornesch and Eidelstedt in urgent need - removing bottlenecks .

    particularities

At the Pinneberg-Mitte, Halstenbek-Rellingen and Halstenbek-Krupunder driveways, there are flow control systems that allow only individual vehicles to enter the motorway when there is heavy traffic by means of rapidly changing traffic lights, thus avoiding traffic jams on the motorway due to excessive traffic.

Another special feature is the transition to the A 7 to the north. Traffic leaves the A 23 at the Hamburg-Eidelstedt exit and meets the traffic light-controlled intersection on Holsteiner Chaussee. The straight-ahead lane then leads directly into a tunnel of the Hamburg-Nordwest motorway triangle and thus onto the A 7. Originally, the motorway triangle was built as a pure fork towards the north; the redesign took place in the 1990s.
