history

The place name Schafstedt, in Low German “Schapestede” meaning “place of the sheep”, could indicate the economic value that the sheep or sheep farming had for this place in the past. Another popular interpretation of the place name goes back to "Skafa", meaning the same as ship, and could refer to the traffic connection via the Holstenau , Wilsterau and Stör into the Elbe (before the construction of the Kiel Canal ), on which supposedly From the Schafstedter area peat was brought to Hamburg by water .

On April 1, 1934, the parish of Albersdorf was dissolved. All of their villages, village communities and farmers became independent communities / rural communities, including Schafstedt.

coat of arms

The official blazon of the coat of arms, awarded in 1987, reads: "In green above a silver wavy bar, a silver oak tree between two averted, grazing silver sheep."

The coat of arms shows a sheep and refers to the name of the municipality. The silver wave bar refers to the river connection to Hamburg. The coat of arms is a "talking" coat of arms in two senses . In a general sense, the sheep are intended more as evidence of the agricultural character of this completely normal farming village. The oak tree represents a 300 year old oak tree in the center of the village and at the same time indicates the importance of the oak trees, which largely determine the landscape of this region. The green shield color reflects this landscape as well as the still agricultural character of the municipality.
