Location of the community Groven in the district of Dithmarschen
map

Groven is a municipality in the Dithmarschen district in Schleswig-Holstein .

geography

Eider near Wollersum around 1895
Drainage ditch in the district of Flehderwurth

location

The place is right on the Eider . In the meantime, after a relocation of the river, the district of Nesserdeich was an island, Wollersum was even torn down by the Eider in 1593 and 1601. Until the Eider Barrage was built in 1973, extensive protective measures were necessary to prevent it from happening again.

Community structure

It is divided into the districts of Flehderwurth, Groven, Mahde, Nesserdeich and Wollersum.

Neighboring communities

Neighboring communities are the communities of Lehe , Lunden , Krempel , Rehm-Flehde-Bargen and Karolinenkoog (all in the Dithmarschen district) and Oldenswort (in the Nordfriesland district ), starting clockwise to the north .

history

The history of the place was shaped by the proximity to the Eider . The ferry in Wollersum served as an important link between Dithmarschen and North Frisia until the Eider railway bridge was built in 1877 . Many of the grave slabs at the Lunden family cemetery were probably also delivered here.

On April 1, 1934, the parish Lunden was dissolved. All of their villages, village communities and farmers became independent communities / rural communities, including Groven.

On July 1, 1936, the communities Flehderwurth, Mahde-Wollersum and Nesserdeich, which until 1934 belonged to the parish of Lunden, were incorporated.

politics

Community representation

Since the municipal elections in 2013, the WGG voter community has all seven seats in the municipal council.

coat of arms

Blazon : "Over a silver corrugated shield foot, inside a blue fish, in green a silver, black bridled horse head."

Culture and sights

The landscape is particularly suitable for hiking and cycling. In Wollersum, at the old ferry terminal, there is a very idyllic swimming area on the Eider.

Economy and Infrastructure

The community of Groven can be reached by motorway ( A23 ) via the Autobahn feeder Bundesstraße 5 at Hemme or Karolinenkoog.
