history

The name Delve is derived from the Low German delf = ditch. Fishermen settled here early on, who protected their houses on the Geest from floods, but were still able to build them in the immediate vicinity of the Eider.

The oldest written mention of the place dates from May 7, 1281 from a contract with the city of Hamburg . Between 1140 and 1281 the Marienkirche was built as a solid field stone building and the parish of Delve was founded. 1329 is the year of the oldest written mention of Schwienhusen, a district of Delve. In 1352 the marching settlements of Hemmerfeld, Langenhorn, Oesterwisch, Langendiekstedt and Wurthemme in Delver Koog went under in the floods of the Eider at the “ First groten Manndränke ”. In the 15th and 16th centuries, Delver Church was expanded into a fortress.

In the middle of the 16th century, during the Reformation , the Eider formed the border between the peasant republic of Dithmarschen and the Duchy of Schleswig , which belonged to Denmark . The Eider was already heavily used as a shipping route in the lower reaches . in the

In 1559, parish bailiff Hans Löbkens from Schwienhusen and ten other men put about 200 Frisians who had pillaged the neighboring town of Wallen during the conquest of Dithmarschen and set course for his village to flee.

In 1617 the " Black Death " was going on in Delve . Numerous residents are killed by the plague. A large conflagration cremated 35 residential and farm buildings at Whitsun 1676. In 1712 the plague left its mark on Delve again. In 1717 the area of the Eider was hit by a severe storm surge , the Christmas flood. Most of the dikes at Delve were washed away. Then the dikes were rebuilt, as they still exist today.

1741 was the year of the oldest written mention of the Delver Skippers Guild. It was probably over 100 years old at the time. With the opening of the Eider Canal , the first direct connection between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea in 1784, at the time the most important shipping canal in the world, Delve gained in importance as a shipping location. The year 1825 saw a large dike breach near Delve. The water reached as far as the church. A ship was anchored in the cemetery that was then still by the church. From October to December 1850 the Delver Church served as a military hospital for Schleswig-Holstein fighters who were wounded in the bombardment of Friedrichstadt in the German-Danish War . On February 7, 1867, the Delve-Schwienhusen men's choir, the oldest still existing club in Delve, was founded. On October 1st, 1886, some farmers founded a dairy cooperative .

In 1889 there were 16 seagoing vessels and four inland vessels in Delve  . In addition to the owners of these sailing ships, another twelve Delver had the captain's and helmsman's license for large voyages. In 1905, when the Norderdithmarschen circular line went into operation, Delve was connected to the rail network. The Delve electricity cooperative had been supplying the town with electricity since 1926. In 1928 and 1929 the Delver Höft, the unloading and loading point on the Eider, was completely renovated. The Delve-Schwienhusen volunteer fire brigade, founded in early 1930, took over fire protection in the community in place of the previous "forced brigade".

On April 1, 1934, the parish of Delve was dissolved. All of their village communities, village communities and farmers became independent communities / rural communities, including their main town, Delve.

At the end of the Second World War , many refugees also came to Delve and Schwienhusen. The population of both places rose from 721 (pre-war level) to 1525 (highest level in 1946). By 1956, the number had fallen to 844 due to relocations to southern Germany.

At the beginning of the school year 1965/66, the new village community school was given its purpose. In 1969 the "Eidertal" campsite was inaugurated and put into operation.

With effect from August 1, 1974, the Delve secondary school was converted into a primary school and merged with the Linden primary school on January 1, 2008 . It is now called "Lütte Geestschool'n Delv un Lin". On August 31, 1974, the Delve police station was dissolved and assigned to Hennstedt. In July 1981, the Delve municipality's public sewage system was ready for operation. The historic ferry connection over the Eider between Schwienhusen and Bargen was resumed on May 26, 2001 after an almost 40-year rest period by a new "Bargener Ferry" (for pedestrians and cyclists).

The independent municipality Schwienhusen, which emerged from the parish of Delve on April 1, 1934, was incorporated into the Delve municipality on January 1, 1982.

Culture and village image

Homestead in Delve

Delve still contains a comparatively large number of historical buildings. Starting with fishermen's cottages near the banks of the Eider to large farmsteads on the outskirts of the former town center. There are still around 40 older thatched houses in the village.

The Sankt-Marien-Kirche is a stone church from the 13th century, which was given a bricked west facade in 1898. Three votive ships in the church indicate the importance that shipping once played for the place. The bell stack dates from 1350 and replaced an older round tower. It is thus the second oldest free-standing bell tower in Europe.

The community is home to several clubs, including the gymnastics and sports club from 1911 (TSV Delve), the men's choir Delve-Schwienhusen from 1867, the Delve women's choir, the Delve-Schwienhusen fire brigade music train and the Delvtown Jazzmen.

From 1905 to 1937 the place had a railway connection with the Norderdithmarschen district railway .

Today the community is still strongly characterized by agriculture, but it is developing into a so-called sleeping village. The tourism is becoming ever more important for the community with its location directly on the Eider an infrastructure of camping, marina, in Delve canoe rental station provides and extensive cycle paths of clover tour available. In summer, between May and August, the Bargen ferry for pedestrians and cyclists runs between Bargen and Delve. The ferry connection at the 108 meter wide point existed from 1554 to 1961 and was reopened in 2001.
