Delf (ditch)

Delf is an old name for a (water) ditch . It was common in both Middle Dutch and Middle Low German and has its roots in West Germanic .

Even today there are many place , field and waterway names in the Netherlands ( Delft , Delfzijl ) and in northern Germany ( Ratsdelft , Falderndelft , Delm , Delve , Delvenau , the Delf district of Finnentrop , the Delfshausen district of Rastede , the Delftor exit of Itzehoe , the Delft or Delftstrom in Cuxhaven ), which go back to this word.
