history

City map from 1575, in the middle of Delft with the connection to the Old Moat

From 800 AD onwards, the Delft developed into a stately harbor at the confluence of the Ehe in the Ems . The word “ Delft ” (“dig” from the verb delven for “dig”) points to the development of a natural body of water by humans. In the heyday of Emden it housed more ships than the entire English kingdom and just gave West Frisian boatmen and traders a new home.

In the middle of the city, directly at the town hall of Emden , the Ratsdelft used to be larger and still played a role as a transshipment point after 1900. Various trading houses were located here. Marine painters like Willy Stöwer or the graphic artist Ernst Petrich document impressively in their pictures the maritime and busy life of this part of the Emden port around 1920 and after.

As early as 1887, the rear, northern part of the Ratsdelftes with the connection to the Alter Graben was filled in and the city garden was created there, so that the Delft as a water arm or harbor basin only extends as far as the Emden town hall. This is where the harbor basin ends with the Delft staircase that was built at that time. After the Second World War, the citizens filled the majority of the Ratsdelft with rubble.

Todays use

Part of the Ratsdelft is now used as a berth for museum ships. The lightship Amrumbank , the rescue cruiser Georg Breusing and the herring logger city of Emden are moored in the harbor . The Delft staircase now serves as a landing stage for port tours.

At events such as the Emden Matjestagen , the Ratsdelft is also used as a landing stage for traditional ships .
