history

The first people probably settled around. 3000 BC Chr. In this area. This could be documented by a barrow that was discovered during construction work in 1982 and is now exhibited in the Delfzijl muzeeaquarium . To protect themselves from the tides , which repeatedly washed over large parts of the low-lying land, the early residents built so-called Wurten , hills on which only farms and later entire villages were built. Such Wurtendörfer (Dutch: wierdendorp ) are typical for the Delfzijler area. See also: Loppersum (Groningen) .

Delfzijler Schanze, sketch by J. Blaeu , 1649

The name Delfzijl appears for the first time in a document dated June 19, 1303 . Around 1300 a lock was built in the historic Delft river, which ran from Groningen City to the Ems . A few years later, two more were added. The natural harbor soon became a transshipment point for goods of all kinds and the number of inhabitants rose sharply as a result.

In 1580, during the Eighty Years' War , the Watergeuzen (resistance fighters) built the "small hill " under the direction of the Groninger Barthold Entens . However, this fell into the hands of the Spanish occupiers a year later. In 1591 , Prince Moritz von Orange and his nephew Count Wilhelm Lodewijk recaptured the hill and thus cut off Groningen, which would later be besieged, from its important access to the sea. Under the direction of the fortress builder and military leader Johan van den Kornput , the hill was expanded and reinforced. Delfzijl became a fortress town with 40 m wide canals, a rampart with five bulwarks, ring ditches and on the sea side there was a dike with wooden barriers. The location of today's center and the course of the streets, as well as the names of some of the streets, go back to this 16th century.

This provided protection from enemy attacks and the water gates could be closed when the tide was high . Half a century later, on August 6, 1655, the Dutch admiral Michiel de Ruyter sought refuge from English warships with his fleet in the port of Delfzijl.

In 1859 Delfzijl had three main streets, five side streets and 1760 inhabitants.

On May 11, 1940, Delfzijl was occupied by Wehrmacht troops (see campaign in the west ). There is an anti-aircraft battery (four were in two months 10.5-cm - aircraft guns ), barracks and radar station built what further addition to 30 German and Dutch sites (inter alia in the neighboring.. Termunten ) the air defense ring around the important German industrial and port city of Emden form should. The guns were mounted in recesses on the dike. At the end of the Second World War , the Wehrmacht wanted / should keep the escape route over the Ems to East Frisia free. The Western Allies attacked from April 23 to May 2, 1945; the town of Delfzijl and the village of Holwierde were badly damaged. After hard and bloody fighting, the attackers prevailed.

The Muzeeaquarium Delfzijl (Maritime Museum) was built in 1960 on one of the bunkers that have been preserved to this day and are visible in the area , and marine aquariums were set up there in the former military building (ammunition refill room , type FL 246 ) .

economy

After the Second World War , Delfzijl experienced an economic boom. The port is the fifth largest seaport in the Netherlands and offers a good starting point for a number of industrial companies. Gas, oil and salt discoveries in the vicinity did the rest for the settlement of large companies. The company Aluminum Delfzijl , which today belongs to the Tata Steel group, produces here . Akzo Nobel operates plants for membrane electrolysis and for chlorinated hydrocarbons . The Delfzijl Chemical Park is around 100 hectares in size and is the second largest Dutch chemical industry location after Rotterdam .

politics

The generally poor economic situation and party-political squabbles have repeatedly fueled local politics in recent years. Continued emigration from large companies caused unemployment to rise. Many councilors and mayors had to leave the field early on in the local council. At the end of 2017, the municipal councils of Delfzijl, Appingedam and Loppersum discussed the merger of the municipalities. They are working towards a merger on January 1, 2021. Annemarie Jorritsma also held the office of mayor for a short time before she took up her position in Almere . From May 1, 2004 to February 14, 2006, Maritje Appel-de Waart was mayor of Delfzijl. She resigned after a long conflict with the magistrate. Gerard Beukema ( PvdA ) has been acting mayor of the community since October 1st, 2015 .
