The paid circulation in the first quarter of 2008 was 134,303 (print) and 15,281 (e-newspaper) copies. The editor-in-chief is Pieter Sijpersma.
The newspaper is aimed at the regions of Groningen and Drenthe . It emerged in April 2002 from the merger of the Nieuwsblad van het Noorden , the Drentse Courant and the Groninger Dagblad .
In March 2004, the newspaper extended its delivery to the German border area in order to be able to reach Dutch people living in Germany.
Role during the German occupation
The Nieuwsblad van het Noorden came under fire when the book Het Schandaal (The Scandal) by Johan van Gelder was published in the Netherlands in 2000 and examined the newspaper's relationship to the German occupiers during the Second World War . The revelations in the book were in stark contrast to the representations of the two owners, the brothers Nico and Jan Abraham Hazewinkel, who always denied the suspicion of collaboration with the National Socialists .
During the German occupation, the Dagblad, like many other Dutch daily newspapers, had to publish anti-Semitic and pro-German articles. When in 1944 they refused to accept an editor-in-chief of NSB ( Nationaal-Socialistische Bewegungsing ) - due to its National Socialist orientation at the time of the German occupation, the only party allowed at times - a ban on appearance was issued. The Deutsche Zeitung in the Netherlands was published on the printing presses until the end of the occupation . On January 26, 1946, the newspaper appeared for the first time after the war with a circulation of 35,000 copies.
