history
The area was inhabited as early as the Bronze Age. The place Emmen was mentioned for the first time in the 12th century as Curtis Emne ("Hof von Emmen") and remained a rural village until the 20th century. After the Second World War , the economically weak region was subsidized by the state as a development area and, above all, the textile and metal industries were established. In the early years of the post-war period, Emmen was one of the fastest growing cities in the Netherlands. Emmen developed from a poor farming village to an important city. Extensive residential construction work became necessary. Some of these were planned at a large distance from the existing buildings so as not to destroy valuable landscape areas. As a result, the city takes up a relatively large area. Today Emmen is the largest city in the province of Drenthe , ahead of the provincial capital Assen . Toyism was founded in 1992 .
