economy
Norg and also Roden attract many tourists. In Veenhuizen there is a correctional facility, which consists of several "struck" (institutions), u. a. "Esserheem", and is the largest employer in the community. Roden has a small industrial and commercial area. Many farmers still live in the community, as do commuters who work in Groningen.
history
The area of the municipality was already inhabited in the Middle and Neolithic times. Most villages developed around an Anger in the early Middle Ages . For centuries, the village of Peize lived from growing hops for the then many beer breweries in the city of Groningen.
In 1823 King Wilhelm I set up an imperial institution in Veenhuizen. Their job was to retrain bums, petty criminals, prostitutes, etc. from the cities to become farmers during their imprisonment. To do this, they had to reclaim the surrounding moor themselves. Small farms were made available to them at low rents. The project of this "Maatschappij van Weldadigheid" (Society of Charity) was only partially successful. Many could not adapt to the strict discipline and fell back into their old lives after their release.
