history

At Haulerwijk, archaeologists found evidence that carriers of the Middle Stone Age Hamburg culture lived here more than 12,000 years ago.

In 1328 the area declared itself independent from Drenthe, administered by the bishop of Utrecht . It was then administered by judges employed by the population themselves, called Stellingen. It was then the bone of contention between the Frisians, the Dutch and the Utrecht diocese. Positions called “werven” were built as defensive works in the countryside.

In the 16th century Stellingwerf became a "grietenij" (large municipality) of Friesland, which was later divided into two parts (see Weststellingwerf ). From around 1600 until the beginning of the 20th century, peat was extracted in the boggy part of the municipality . From 1950, the improvement of roads and tourism put an end to the persistent poverty in the area.
