Jure Franko (born March 28, 1962 in Nova Gorica , Yugoslavia (now Slovenia )) is a former Yugoslav ski racer .

biography

Franko won the silver medal in slalom and bronze in giant slalom at the 1980 European Junior Championships in Madonna di Campiglio . He reached the peak of his career in the 1983/84 season, when he finished third in World Cup races twice in the Super-G and once in the giant slalom .

He achieved the greatest success of his career on February 14, 1984 at the Winter Olympics in Sarajevo , when he - starting for Yugoslavia - won the silver medal in the giant slalom. After the first round, Franko was still in fourth place. With the best time in the second round, he moved up to second place. This was the first medal for Yugoslavia in the history of the Winter Games. Franko finished his most successful season in 5th place in the Giant Slalom World Cup.

In the following season he was able to place in the top ten seven times in World Cup races. But he did not reach the top ranks. After the 1984/85 season he ended his career as a competitive athlete.
