history

Station of the Wocheiner Bahn. The border with Gorizia (Italy) runs through the circle in the foreground

The Treaty of Paris divided the Austrian city of Görz / Gorizia until 1918 and Italian until 1945 . East of the old town of Gorizia, the border was set immediately west of the Wocheiner Bahn , so that it runs across the station forecourt ( Piazza Transalpina / Trg Evropa ). The station was occupied by Yugoslav partisans on May 1, 1945 along with the entire city of Gorizia east of the Isonzo .

In 1948 the foundation stone was laid for the new city center of Nova Gorica, a city from the drawing board, which is the most important urbanism project of the city planner and architect Edvard Ravnikar , as a new urban center for the Yugoslav side of the border. Nova Gorica also includes older settlements that existed before 1947. Nova Gorica has been a university town since the University of Nova Gorica was founded in 1995.

Since December 21, 2007, the state border Slovenia-Italy can be crossed at any point due to the Schengen Agreement , to which Slovenia has acceded; regular border controls have been discontinued. This greatly reduces the separating effect of the division of Gorizia, which has been in effect under international law since 1947. All citizens of a state of the European Union are entitled to cross the border without a permit .

Based on the German city name Gorizia, Nova Gorica is referred to as Neu-Gorizia in some unofficial texts .

The pilgrimage site of Heiligenberg is not far from the city .
