Otočac [ ˈɔtɔːtʃats ] ( Hungarian : Otocsán ; German : Ottocan , Italian : Ottocio ) is a town in the Lika region , Croatia . It is the seat of the large community of the same name.
history
Fortica (Ital .: Fortezza) Otočac was a fortress in the 17th century in the system of the Habsburg military border . One of the commanders was Andree Bernhardin von Oberburg .
Geographical location
Otočac is located on the Gacka River , in the western part of the Gacka karst field (Croatian: Gacko polje ) between the Velebit Mountains and the Mala Kapela , at an altitude of 459 meters. The city is located southeast of Senj , northwest of Gospić and west of the Plitvice Lakes .
The city itself is divided into a lower town and an upper town.
Demographics
The city had 4,240 inhabitants in 2011. 9,778 people live in the large community of the same name. Of these, 91.18% are Croats and 7.25% Serbs . In 1991 there were still 24,779 inhabitants in the municipality, 65% of them Croatians and 32% Serbs. The Croatians in Otočac speak the Čakavian dialect of the Croatian language, the Bunjewatzen the Štokavian dialect of Croatian. The majority of Serbian villages are Gorići and Staro Selo .

The Gacka River is popular with anglers because of its abundance of trout . There is a smaller sports airfield. The Bezdanjača cave system on Vatinovac Mountain and the Velebit Bioreserve are attractive destinations in the region .
