course

Gacka at the source

The Gacka is an abyssal river that flows curvy from its source in the southeast over a length of 11 km through the Gacka plain between the Velebit Mountains and the Mala Kapela . It rises in the southeastern part of the karst field of Gacka (Croatian Gacko polje ) 457 meters above sea level. d. M. in a canyon in the hinterland of the Velebit massif near Tonković vrilo ( Eng . Tonković source). After that, the hydropower will be used to operate several watermills at Sinac . In its upper reaches, it is reinforced by several tributaries (Knjapovac, Begovac and Malinišće) and then meanders through the Gacka plain and through the town of Otočac to the northwest. The main tributaries downstream are the Sinačka pučina and the Kostelka .

Containment

From the original course of the river, only eleven kilometers from Sinac to Vivoze remain. Then the river flows in canals and is led through a tunnel into a lake to Gusić polje, from where it again passes through a tunnel to the turbines in Sv. Juraj drives and then ends up in the sea.

Old course

Before that, the Gacka flowed in its southern tributary to Švica, first into the Upper Lake (Gornje švičko jezero), and finally plunging into a waterfall into the Lower Lake (Donje švičko jezero). Then it flowed through Kompolje and dried up at Hrvatsko Polje .

Fishing

The Gacka is known by anglers for its large brown trout . There are also rainbow trout, as well as grayling , carp , eel and chub . The brown trout in the Gacka grows four to five times faster than in some other rivers in the karst areas, which is mainly due to the optimal water temperature with only slight annual oscillations, the oxygen content and the slightly alkaline water chemistry. The fishing season runs from the beginning of April to the end of September. The year-round catch is around 1000 to 1200 kg of fish from the source to the Orisković Bridge in Prozor and 450 kg from the Orisković Bridge to Vivoze. The Gacka is a natural breeding area in its entire course. In addition, the river is enriched with young trout every year.
