The Sveti Rok peak in the Velebit massif
Velebit massif near Starigrad-Paklenica

The Velebit (roughly "Great Being") is a mountain range on the coastal region of Croatia . It has been declared a nature park. In the mountain area there are two national parks ( Northern Velebit National Park and Paklenica National Park ) and, near the town of Gospić, the state-protected Velebit Nature Park .

The Velebit forms a climate barrier between the Mediterranean climate and the mountainous climate in the interior.

geography

With a length of 145 km, the Velebit is the longest massif of the Dinarides . The width of the Velebit is between 10 and 30 km, the total area about 2200 km². The highest peak is the Vaganski Vrh at 1,757 m. The Premužićeva staza summit hiking trail , built between 1930 and 1933, leads over a length of 50 km through the northern and central parts of the mountain range.

On the east side facing the mainland, the Velebit is predominantly densely forested. On the coast side, the vegetation is mostly sparse. The notorious cold fall wind Bura (Italian: Bora ) has its origin in this part of the Adriatic . Due to its numerous caves , Velebit is a popular destination for speleologists. In 2004 the Jama Velebita , which hides the deepest vertical direct descent discovered to date in a cave (513 m), was discovered.

The most important structure is the Sveti Rok road tunnel (5,681 m), which connects two climatic zones: the mountainous climate of central Croatia with the Mediterranean climate on the Croatian coast. Several road passes also lead over the Velebit. The endemic Degenia ( Degenia velebitica ) is a plant from the cruciferous family and is considered a symbol of the region. It is depicted on the 50 Lipa coin of the Croatian currency .

Protected areas

In the north of Velebit lies the Northern Velebit National Park , in the south the Paklenica National Park , with the Velebit Nature Park in between . The Velebit Nature Park has been protected since 1981. Brown bears , wolves , lynxes , eagles and, in some places, many horned vipers live here in the wild . In the Kuterevo bear sanctuary , young orphans are cared for until they are released into the wild.

Second World War

During the Second World War, the two concentration camps Gospić and Jadovno were located in the area of the mountains .

Culture

The Velebit massif has a similar meaning for the Croats as the Olympus for the Greeks or the Fuji for the Japanese . Numerous myths, legends and ancient folk tunes such as B. that of the " Vila Velebita " ( fairy from Velebit). The mountainous landscape of Velebit inspired the creation of the patriotic song of Vila Velebita in the 19th century . On Velebit there are filming locations for some Karl May films .

Mine hazard

In some areas in the southern part of Velebit, due to the mine situation , hiking away from signposted paths should be avoided. In the area of the Tulove Grede and the Mali Alan there are still anti-personnel mines from the Croatian war .
