The Lastovo Nature Park has been a protected area in the southern Adriatic Sea in southern Croatia ( Dubrovnik-Neretva County ) since 2006 . The nature park includes the island of Lastovo and the surrounding archipelago. A total of 44 islands, islets and rocks are included in the nature park. Lastovo and Sušac are among the largest islands .
The area of the nature park is 195.83 km 2 . Of this area, 52.71 km 2 are islands and 143.12 km 2 are marine areas.
Characteristics
The area of the Lastovo Nature Park is one of the best preserved areas on the Adriatic Sea . It represents an extensive natural area on the islands and the surrounding marine area, which has been partially cultivated. It is characterized by its extraordinary ecological value, which is of national and international importance. The nature reserve is also characterized by its scenic, educational, cultural-historical and tourist-recreational value. The protected area was established to protect the geographical and cultural heritage, as well as the biological and scenic diversity, including the included (submarine) marine area.
Wildlife
One of the special features of the Lastovo Archipelago is the fact that the islands do not contain any poisonous or dangerous animal species. Poisonous spiders, such as the black widow, which can be found occasionally on rocky coastlines, are not found on the islands. There are also no poisonous snakes in the nature park . Grass snakes, which are harmless to humans, can only be found in the nature park area.
