Christopher "Chris" Lawler (born October 20, 1943 in Liverpool ) is an English football player who contributed a lot to the success of Liverpool FC in the 1960s and 1970s.
Athletic career
Lawler joined the local football club in 1959 and made his debut as a right-back at 19. He improved continuously over the following two seasons, until he finally advanced to the first eleven as a right-back in 1965 and stood on the field in the victory in the FA Cup final against Leeds United at Wembley and the club won the trophy for the first time of its history.
From then on he was the first choice for coach Bill Shankly and missed only three games in the following seven seasons. In 1966 he won the league championship and survived Shankly's great upheaval, which replaced many stars from the 1960s with young talent. Besides him, only Emlyn Hughes , Ian Callaghan and Tommy Smith from the "old generation" remained in the team. Lawler was in the 1971 FA Cup final when Liverpool lost it to Arsenal. In 1973 he won the championship and the UEFA Cup again with the Reds . At that time he also played four games for the national team and scored in his debut against Malta . In 1974 he sat injured on the bench in the FA Cup final, but also received one of the winners' medals after Liverpool beat Newcastle United 3-0. After Shankly's departure in the summer of 1974, Lawler's time in Liverpool was also drawing to a close. The new coach Bob Paisley signed the excellent right-back Phil Neal at the end of the year, Lawler only played sporadically from then on. In September 1975 he ran for the last time for Liverpool and moved to Portsmouth FC , who was coached by his former Liverpool team-mate Ian St. John .
After two years in Portsmouth and a temporary guest appearance in the North American professional league NASL with the Miami Toros , he played for Stockport County between 1977 and 1978 before ending his playing career at the Welsh club Bangor City and then in Norway at IK Grand Bodø and Raufoss IL let.
He has since been active as a talent scout for Liverpool from time to time. At the same time, he teaches children to play football in Skelmersdale .
