Stockport County (officially Stockport County Football Club ) is an English football club from Stockport , Greater Manchester . The club plays its home games at Edgeley Park and has been nicknamed The Hatters ( German  the Hatter ) since Stockport regarded as a center of English hat industry. The team has been participating in the National League since the 2019/20 season.

history

Stockport County was founded in 1883 by members of the Wycliffe Congressional Church under the name Heaton Norris Rovers , and played the first official game in October 1884. On May 24, 1890, the name was changed to Stockport County Football Club .

The club played until the license was granted for the Football League Second Division , the second highest English division at the time, in 1900 in the Lancashire League . After relegation in the meantime, this affiliation was regained in 1904.

In 1989, the Uruguayan Danny Bergara took over the club as the first non-European coach and led it through the following six years. In the 1988/89 season he reached with the club the league in the fourth division, then called Football League Fourth Division , and thus prevented relegation to the Conference National . The following year he led the club to fourth place and qualified for the promotion play-offs. In two games, however, the team lost 6-0 in total against Chesterfield FC and missed the possible promotion.

In the 1997/98 season Stockport played for the first time in over 60 years in the second highest English division - the First Division (today's Football League Championship ). However, from 2002 the crash into the fourth league, which could be compensated somewhat by the rise in 2008 in Football League One .

After the unsatisfactory 2009/10 season, in which only five wins this season were won, which resulted in relegation to the fourth division, head coach Gary Ablett left the club. As his successor, Paul Simpson, who had previously been dismissed from Shrewsbury Town , took over the reins on the sidelines in July 2010 . At the end of the 2010/11 season, the club had to move into the fifth division, the Conference National , with position 24 .

Hall of Fame

The club's own Hall of Fame (German: Hall of Fame) was created on October 12, 2002 as a souvenir for the first home win in the Football League Second Division , which was realized a hundred years earlier with a 2-1 home win against Manchester United . As a result, a selection of players were inducted into the Stockport County Hall of Fame .

The following 20 players were honored with the establishment of the Stockport County Hall of Fame :
