Samuel "Sammy" Baxter McIlroy (born August 2, 1954 in Belfast ) is a former Northern Irish football player . With the Northern Irish national team he took part in the Football World Cup in 1982 and 1986.

Player career

Manchester United (1971–1982)

Sammy McIlroy made his debut for Manchester United in the Football League First Division in 1971/72 and scored four goals in 16 league games in his debut season. His breakthrough as a regular player came when the golden generation around Bobby Charlton , Denis Law and George Best left the club in 1973 and 1974, respectively. The upheaval within the team, however, led to relegation to the second division in the 1973/74 season . The first second division season since 1938 led to winning the championship in the second division and direct promotion. McIlroy was used in all 42 league games and scored seven goals. The return to the Football League First Division 1975/76 succeeded the climber to Sammy McIlroy (41 games / 10 goals) with the third place in the table. In addition to the good league placement, ManU moved into the final of the FA Cup 1975/76 , but lost the final game against FC Southampton with 0: 1. Coach Tommy Docherty's team performed even better in the FA Cup in 1976/77 . After goals by Stuart Pearson and Jimmy Greenhoff when Jimmy Case conceded , United won 2-1 against Liverpool . After two less successful years, United managed to win the runner-up behind Liverpool FC in the First Division in 1979/80 . Previously, McIlroy had reached the final of the FA Cup 1978/79 for the third time with his team , but missed the second title in this prestigious competition (2: 3 against Arsenal). Sammy McIlroy had equalized 2-2 in the 88th minute before Alan Sunderland scored the winning goal for Arsenal a minute later.

Stoke City (1982-1985)

After losing his regular place at ManU, the 27-year-old Sammy McIlroy moved to league rivals Stoke City in February 1982 . In the 1982/83 season McIlroy (41 games / 8 goals) reached 13th place in the table with Stoke. After another season in the lower third of the table, he rose with City in 1984/85 as a knocked-off bottom of the table in the second division.

Further stations (1985–1993)

Sammy McIlroy then moved to Manchester City in August 1985 at the age of 31 . With the promoted team he secured relegation in the 1985/86 season. This was followed by other positions at Örgryte IS , FC Bury , VfB Mödling , Preston North End and Northwich Victoria before he ended his playing career in 1993.

Northern Ireland National Team (1972-1986)

Sammy McIlroy played his first international match for Northern Ireland on February 16, 1972 at the age of 17 (1: 1 against Spain). For the 1982 World Cup in Spain he was appointed to the Northern Irish squad . McIlroy played all three preliminary round matches and moved into the second round by beating hosts Spain 1-0 in the third game. After a draw with Austria (2: 2) and a defeat against France (1: 4) Northern Ireland was eliminated from the tournament. Four years later he was again in the Northern Irish squad for the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. Sammy McIlroy again played all three preliminary round matches , but this time failed after defeats against Spain and Brazil in the preliminary round. On October 15, 1986, he played his 88th and last international match in a 3-0 draw against England.

Coaching career

Sammy McIlroy started his coaching activity in 1992 as a player-coach at the lower class club Northwich Victoria . From 1993 to 2000 he coached Macclesfield Town , with whom he rose to the fourth division in 1997 and the third division a year later. From February 23, 2000 to October 15, 2003 he was in charge of the Northern Irish national team. In qualifying for the 2002 World Cup , however, he only reached fifth place out of six teams. After Northern Ireland even finished fifth and last in qualifying for the 2004 World Cup , Sammy McIlroy ended his work with the Northern Irish Association. After another stint at the third division Stockport County , he coached Morecambe FC from 2005 to 2011 . In 2007 he led the club into Football League Two .
